A brand is a concept that makes your business immediately identifiable to your customers.
The best way to think about it is ‘your business is your brand’. So, everything from your business name and your logo to your website design, colour pallets, fonts and written content are all ‘branding’.
The quality and consistency of your branding is an indication of the quality of the services and products that you offer. It is the first impression people will have of your business, so it is vitally important to get it right. Furthermore, your brand is what makes your business unique and is what will help set you aside from the competition.
Your logo is the stamp by which people will identify your business and your brand, so it is very important that your logo is high quality, on brand and remains identifiable in all sizes and formats.
In short, you can opt for whichever you prefer!
That being said, many people prefer to include paying for a logo as part of their initial business setup because it requires a good amount of creative know-how and an awful lot of time!
Ask anyone to create a list of famous logos and it’s likely brands such as Nike, McDonalds and Coca-Cola will feature somewhere. Each one is totally unique and yet remarkably similar in that they all feature a simple icon and a palette of two contrasting colours.
A good logo needs to be simple, distinctive, memorable and practical. It should be readable and identifiable across a variety of settings both online and offline and (here’s the big challenge) it needs to be totally unique!
Top tip: If you’re having a go at designing your own logo, check out how it looks in monochrome. Taking the colour away will give you a much better idea of how strong your design is. When we design logos for our customers, we always present our first selection of designs in monochrome – it’s amazing how much colour can influence a design!
